BMX, short for bicycle motocross, began in the 1970s in Southern California. BMX is similar to its cycle sport cousins motocross and mountain biking, involving specialized bikes that are lighter and smaller than mountain or road bikes. Increasing in popularity in the mid 70’s and 80’s, BMX became a worldwide phenomenon. A decline hit soon after however, and the sport nearly died until the X Games brought it back to the mainstream in 1995. ESPN’s X Games rescued several action sports, most notably skateboarding.
The primary disciplines for BMX biking are freestyle BMX and racing, but those can be further broken down into Flatland, Street, Park Riding, and Dirt Riding BMX. Whether you’re a fan of the freestyle bike dancing of Flatland, or the insane jumps and tricks of Park Riding, Rad Season is your ticket to witnessing BMX action worldwide.
