Old meets new and urban culture meets country at Bilbao BBK Live 2024

BBK Live is anything but boring! An emerging destination for culture vultures, sleep is not on the menu as revellers watch the sun go down sitting on the grass in front of the main stage and finish epic nights watching the dawn break from the clearing in the woods at Basoa.

Recovering the spirit of venues dedicated to ambient music, so frequent at clubs in the 90s, the Lasai Stage aims to serve both as a meeting place and vanishing point. The music played at Lasai doesn’t exceed 100 beats per minute, the same rate as a human’s heart beat. It is a small space that seeks to promote intimacy and is lined by majestic cypress trees, ensuring all who dance there find the calm and levitate to the tranquil beats.

The green fields of Mount Arraiz, where the campsite is located, is home to the Akelarre stage, referring to a secret meeting place where a series of musicians and Dj’s host sets for the inhabitants. During the daytime the best new acts at the festival are featured, with top Dj’s playing all night.

Enjoy the variety and quality of the gastronomic items on offer within the event enclosure. Cheap drinks combined with an amazing line up of food trucks offer the most delicious food that you can find on the top of a mountain including handmade pizzas, bocadillos, hamburgers, potatoes, kebabs, gourmet sandwiches with ice cream and crepes.

All the big guns head to Spain eager to play for thousands of fans. Past acts include Florence and the Machine, Alt-J, Cigarettes After Sex, The Chemical Brothers, Friendly Fires, My Bloody Valentine and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, the Killers, Pet Shop Boys, Placebo and Supergrass.

Stages are scattered between the valley’s and on the hill tops. Basoa is a stage in the forest, dance in natural surroundings to the beat of electronic music, creating a musical experience that all will remember.

Where is BBK Live

Kobetamendi at Mount Cobetas, in Basque is the idyllic location where the festival is lucky enough to be located. It’s a natural park, a green space with paths where Bilbao’s residents go for exercise, cattle grazes, and is  also home to a lush forest. The port city of Bilbao is located 16kms from the Bay of Biscay in North Spain.

How to get around Bilbao

Festival “Green Coach” buses bring revellers from the UK, Portugal and France direct to Bilbao. Arrive at Bilbao International Airport from any major European city and further afield.

Public transport in Bilbao is plentiful and can all be taken by using a “Bilbao Card”. Avail of buses, metro underground trains and trams around the city.

Ridesharing, UBER and car hire are also readily available.

Where to stay in Bilbao

BBK has campsite accommodation available and as the city is a hub for arts, culture and tourism, there are also many hotels, hostels and guesthouses available.

The camping site is a large green area surrounded by trees, with a capacity for about 12,000 people, situated about 3km from the festival enclosure. There are basic campsites for pitching a tent all the way up to luxury glamping tents that include a full buffet breakfast every morning. Their multicolured PodPads contain bunks and electricity.

The Bcool Hostel Bilbao is metres away from Reproductions Museum Bilbao and Bilborock. Bar and lounge, a café and a microwave in a common area are available at this bright coloured and clean hostel. WiFi in public areas is free. Additionally, a fridge in a common area, a 24-hour front desk and a TV in the common area are available for guest use.

Hotel Ercilla is the busiest 4-star hotel in the middle of the city, situated next to restaurants and trendy shops in town. From basic to penthouse suites, the hotel includes free WiFi and a chilled out atmostphere in it’s bar, restaurant and fitness studio.

Things to do in Bilbao

Bilbao is a port city and a desirable tourism destination for many Europeans. There are many attractions and sites in this beautiful coastal location.

In 1997 the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum put the city on the map. The giant flower covered dog called “Puppy” guards its entrance, and “Maman”, the spider sculpture sits beside its lake, ensures that visiting the museum a worthwhile visit, both inside and out. There are summer exhibitions featured during the festival period.

For keen surfers the waves at Getxo and Sopela beach are only half an hour away by the underground tube train. There are also nudist beaches, set along the stunning coastline that’s been featured in the Game of Thrones television series.
