What to wear

The weather in Colorado is cold at this time of the year. Prepare yourself for a sunny but cold day or even fresh snow.

Wear comfortable shoes for walking through the snow and crowds, the area is larger than you think. All events take place outside. Most visitors wear ski or snowboard clothes to stay warm.

What to pack

Don’t underestimate the winter sun and pack some sunscreen. Take a water bottle to refill and to stay hydrated during the day. A good camera is handy to capture the action.

Top Tips

Wear comfortable shoes: There will be a lot of walking through the crowds at the event so we recommend warm and comfortable shoes.

Wear layers: With the winter weather in Colorado you may suddenly be surprised with snowfall or sunshine. We recommend to wear layers to cater for all weather conditions.

Bring some water: With the event running throughout the day, it’s a good idea to bring water to avoid dehydration.

History of X Games

X Games started off as Extreme Games in Rhode Island during the summer of 1995.

It took almost 2 years before the first winter games were launched and Big Bear Lake hosted the first event in 1997. New disciplines like Freeskiing, Snowmobile SnoCross,  Skiboarding, Snowboard SuperPipe, Moto X Big Air, Ski Slopestyle and Ski SuperPipe have been added before the event was first held in Aspen in 2002.

The 2002 Winter X Games in Aspen made history with many spectators visiting including the entire U.S. Olympic Snowboard Freestyle team before they headed to Salt Lake City for the Olympics.

Today X Games Aspen is one of the best winter action sports events showcasing the world’s best action sports athletes and musical performances on stage.

Things to do in Aspen

There are many things you can do in Aspen, apart from skiing and other snow activities in winter.

Go hiking in the Snowmass Village Hiking Trails, visit the Snowmass Ice Age Discovery Center and go on a ride at the Krabloonik Dogsled Ride.

Is Aspen too busy for snowboarding and skiing during the event? Why not head to A-Basin? Arapahoe Basin is everything Aspen isn’t and vice versa.

Where to stay in Aspen

Aspen has many hotels and lodgings within a 5-mile radius of the festival village. Choose among many of the resorts or apartments. Head to the map below here to secure your accommodation.

What to eat in Aspen

Aspen has a wide selection of restaurants, bars and cafes. Explore the place yourself but pop your head into Element 47, a restaurant slash cocktail bar that offers the best food and drink that Aspen has to offer, a raw bar upstairs and almost 20,000 bottles of wine downstairs.

Another favorite is Jimmy’s. Go and enjoy a drink with views of the Ajax Mountain. Are you more of a craft beer kind of guy or gal? We can’t list them all but here are some of our recommendations.

How to get to Aspen

By Plane

It is easy to get to Aspen with 4 airports to choose from: Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), Eagle County Airport (EGE), Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) and Denver International Airport (DIA). Denver is the largest airport with many direct flights from US and international cities. Aspen is the closest airport to the resort but may cost you a bit more for the convenience.

By Car

Aspen is easy to get to by car but keep in mind the weather conditions. Highway 82 over Independence Pass east of Aspen is usually closed during winter.

Take Interstate 70 and head for Highway 82 at exit 116 towards Glenwood Springs/Aspen. Follow Highway 82 until you see signs for Aspen.

Park your car at one of the recommended event car parks. Free parking is available at the Brush Creek Intercept Lot at Highway 82 and Brush Creek Road and paid parking in Downtown Aspen and Snowmass Village. Shuttle buses run all day and night up to one hour after the final competition or concert. There will be no possibility to park at the event location.

By Bus

Greyhound Buses connect many cities across the US and are your alternative to getting to Aspen. The closest Greyhound location is Glenwood Springs which you can reach directly from Denver. Take one of the other buses from Glenwood Springs like the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) that connects all the resorts and towns close by. RFTA also provides free shuttle service in Aspen town.

Alternatively you can arrange tailored rides with shuttle companies like EpicMountain Express, Colorado Mountain Express, Summit Express and Bustang.

Getting to the event

Shuttle buses run all the time during the event from Brush Creek Intercept Lot, Ruby Park in Downtown Aspen and Snowmass Village Malland Aspen Highlands.

They stop one hour after the final event, either a sports competition or concert. The entrance to the event is located at the base of Buttermilk Mountain Ski Resort at the intersection of Highway 82 and Owl Creek Road.

How to get around Aspen

Aspen is a small town and shuttle buses run all the time. If you don’t want to wait for the next one grab a taxi or rideshare. The distances are short so it won’t cost you much.
