For 17 days in October the town of Blumenau, Brazil becomes a lightning rod of fun and excitement as Germany comes to the Americas. This is the largest Oktoberfest celebration to take place in the entire world, outside of Germany. That means this festival is second only to the town where Oktoberfest was born, in Germany.
Originally started in 1984 to help raise spirits in the town due to a natural disaster, the celebration has grown to a global event. People travel from all over the world to experience what this celebration has to offer. Complete with the “National Championship of Chopp Meter Drinkers”. Each night there is a competition to see who can drink an entire meter of beer without spilling a drop. A winner is crowned at the end of the night. Speaking of crowns there is also a Queen of the Oktoberfest competition as well where 10 ladies compete to be crowned.
With over 15 days of entertainment, you will think you have left South America and wandered over into Germany. With food, music, and German-themed entertainment galore. The town comes alive with German spirit, and for a good reason, the German influences are apparent all over from the waves of Immigrants from there over the years. This German Beer festival comes to live in a beautiful city in southern Brazil, Blumenau. The town is so famous for its influx of German immigrants even the buildings downtown look like they were made in Germany.
There is a great public transit system in town, as well as all of the modern conveniences that you would find in most cities. Taxis, buses, and other local means, like Uber.
