For 17 days in October the town of Blumenau, Brazil becomes a lightning rod of fun and excitement as Germany comes to the Americas. This is the largest Oktoberfest celebration to take place in the entire world, outside of Germany. That means this festival is second only to the town where Oktoberfest was born, in Germany.

Oktoberfest Blumenau History

Originally started in 1984 to help raise spirits in the town due to a natural disaster, the celebration has grown to a global event. People travel from all over the world to experience what this celebration has to offer. Complete with the “National Championship of Chopp Meter Drinkers”.

Each night there is a competition to see who can drink an entire meter of beer without spilling a drop. A winner is crowned at the end of the night. Speaking of crowns there is also a Queen of the Oktoberfest competition as well where 10 ladies compete to be crowned.

How to get around Blumenau

There is a great public transit system in town, as well as all of the modern conveniences that you would find in most cities. Taxis, buses, and other local means, like Uber. Walking, of course, is always a fine option as the streets are often closed for parades, fun, and music. Besides with all the beer you will be drinking it’s best to stagger back to your hotel.

Things to Do in Blumenau

You are going to have your plate filled with things to do if you plan on taking part in the multi-week-long festivities. There is shopping, restaurants, dancing, music, shows, and all sorts of entertainment.

This is known as the “Carnival of the South” and there is a lot going on. However, if that is not enough, again this is a modern city with plenty to do.
