Red Bull Rampage 2017 Highlights

Brett Rheeder, Red Bull Rampage 2017

The 12th Annual Red Bull Rampage freeride mountain biking event was held in Virgin, Utah on October 27th, 2017. There were 18 riders with 2 man build teams, who are not allowed to use power tools, just picks, shovels, and determination. They all carved unique lines into the desert landscape to showcase their particular skills.

This is the final event in the Red Bull Signature Series for 2017, and it did not disappoint. Kurt Sorge, an accomplished Rampage veteran, took first place on the day and became the first rider to win the event 3 times by putting together the most complete top to bottom run of his career.

Cam Zink, another Rampage veteran, competed for his tenth time in this event and put in amazing performance to take home second place. Ethan Nell, a Utah native and Rampage local, competed for the first time at a young age of 20. He won third with a solid performance, and showed his potential for an amazing career.

Red Bull Signature Series legends, Brett Rheeder and Brandon Semenuk, rounded out the top five. One of the biggest surprises of the day came from Antoine Bizet, who put together an amazing, crowd-pleasing, run and much to everyone’s surprise, received a low score and finished in 12th place. Fortunately, Antoine received some redemption in the form of the People’s Choice Award, presented by Utah Sports Commission.

Overall, Red Bull Rampage, though difficult to get to, is more than worth the effort. All 18 riders put on a heart stopping, pulse pounding show, and it was an honor to be there to photograph the event. I cannot wait return in 2018.
