The world-famous bull runs of Pamplona, Spain have spawned dozens of similar events around the world, but certainly none like the San Fermin in New Orleans. There is, however, one slight difference: there are no bulls involved here. Instead, what you have are the adorable Big Easy Rollergirls, known as Rollerbulls, running around on their skates and horned helmets.
‘As a horde of Rollerbulls chase thousands of runners through the streets of New Orleans, spectators are treated to a full day of electrifying fun that’s even more insane than what Spain has to offer.’
There may or may not be booze involved…. The Rollerbulls use harmless foam-filled plastic bats to “gore” the runners, and some even choose to get beat with the bats or gored as a badge of honor. Yep, it gets pretty crazy! Skaters from all derby leagues around the world are welcome to join in on the fun! All you need to do is adorn your helmet with horns, and have a field day terrorizing runners with plastic bats in hand. Over 18,000 runners have participated in the past, so make sure that you register and get a ticket. Runners will be required to wear white t-shirts and white shorts or pants, with a red cloth tied around the waist and neck. Best of all, registered participants are going to be spoiled silly with exclusive access to kick-ass acts. Last year it was The Crystal Method – because you deserve the best after surviving a hot pursuit.
The event is held every July, with the main festivities taking place on Saturday mornings. However, you’re not going to want to miss the phenomenal parties that take place before and after. There will be live music acts, performances, street parties, and overflowing booze. This is New Orleans, after all.
