A recent explosion (sometimes literally) onto the festival scene, Blue Dot Festival is an award-winning festival held at the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Although not often combined, the team at Bluedot Festival have managed to blend the worlds of music, art and science perfectly, with lively music gigs placed alongside in-depth discussions about innovative works of physics and astrology.
Running since 2016, Bluedot’s popularity is increasing year-on-year and with this comes an all-the-more-inspiring line-up. Names such as Brian Cox, Richard Dawkins and Jim Al-Khalili are sure to excite those with an interest in the cosmos and theoretical physics.
Despite covering some in-depth academic topics, Bluedot still has a distinctly festival feel. The main stage features festival favourites such as The Chemical Brothers, Hot Chip and Alt-J who put on performances full of lights, pyrotechnics and epic sound.
‘With world-class speakers, interactive artworks and top headliners, Bluedot has certainly made a name for itself in this niche.’
The 2019 Blue Dot Festival also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the moon landings so it’s sure to be a huge celebratory event!
Blue Dot Festival is held at Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre (Bomish Lane, Macclesfield, SK11 9DL, United Kingdom). This centre is part of the University of Manchester and is both an observatory and science museum. This is the perfect place for a festival of science that was named after the Pale Blue Dot photograph of Earth taken by the Voyager 1 in 1990!
The Lovell Stage for the Blue Dot Festival lies in the shadow of the Lovell Telescope: a marvel of science that has helped us discover our universe; so, festivalgoers are inspired to contemplate both the stars on stage and those in our galaxy!
The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre can be accessed by car, train or bicycle and more information can be found on the Getting Here section of the Jodrell Bank website.
