Sunrise Festival 2019: Escape Into Happiness!

Sunrise Festival is an annual music festival that takes place in the Belgian city of Gierle each June. Originating is a small local festival in 2003, the event grew into a challenging dance event with a national presence. The festival annually welcomes a range of popular names across multiple genres ranging from hardstyle to house, drum & bass, techno and more. 

“The last weekend of June is traditionally the ideal weekend to forget everything for 3 days and enjoy it at sunrise, where everything revolves around discovery, music and experience!”

This year’s edition will welcome a range of popular artists and headlining acts known as ‘highlights of happiness’ across four stages. Friday will welcome the likes of Mattn, Sidney Samson and Double-U and more. Saturday will see Lil’ Kleine, Frenna, Dannic and ChildsPlay among the stacked list of talent. Sunday will close out with the likes of Bizzey, Jebroer, Tony Junior, Curbi and more. The three-day event will also feature some of the biggest and best names in the harder styles. Popular harder styles acts who will also perform at Sunrise Festival include Hard Driver, D-Block & S-te-Fan, Sub Zero Project, Coone, Dr. Peacock, Radical Redemption, Da Tweekaz, Phuture Noize and more.

How to get around Gierle

Located approximately 30 minutes east of Antwerp, the city of Gierle is easily accessible by both car and public transport. The nearest major airport is Antwerp International Airport, which serves flights from most major and budget airlines around Europe. Upon arrival, car rental facilities can be found throughout the terminal, offering cheap and flexible transportation options throughout the duration of the event. You can also travel to Gierle by train or bus. If you are travelling by train you can take the train from Antwerp to Herentals station, followed by a short bus ride to Gierle Kerk. Regional bus services such as FlixBus also offer ground transportation throughout Belgium, as well as from neighbouring cities in the Netherlands and Germany.

Sunrise Festival features an official campsite with ‘sunfields’ accommodation. The sunfields campsite is located within walking distance of the festival; surrounded by a beach and lake. You can bring your own tent and camping supplies or book a pre-setup accommodation package. Pre-setup options include Festipi, Sunrise Tent and KarTent, which are available for 1 to 2 people.

Things to do in Gierle

The small town of Gierle offers a limited number of things to see and do. The De Lilse Bergen recreation area is a popular area and campground for locals and visitors to relax and explore the outdoors. The recreation area features a pond, beach, playgrounds and more; as well as a number of sporting attractions including go-carts, mini-golf, pedal boats, tennis courts, trampolines and more.

Nearby in the city of Antwerp, you can find a range of popular attractions. The city features a number of popular historical attractions, such as the Cathedral of Our Lady Antwerp, an iconic 13th-century landmark and gothic style cathedral. You can also find a range of stunning historical buildings throughout the city’s town square ‘Grote Markt’ as well as the Antwerp City Hall.
