Sierra Leone Marathon 2024: Experience the Street Child
“Sierra Leone? It is in Africa, right?” – Yes, it is. To be specific: It is located in Western Africa right next to Guinea and Liberia. Have you ever thought about going there? No? Then please write it on your bucket list.
Are you wondering why? Beautiful landscapes, interesting people, stunning beaches, colorful marketplaces – It has it all.
It is a unique and inspiring place to visit and definitely an underrated travel destination. It has a lot to offer for people who like to get off the beaten track and experience authentic culture.
One opportunity to visit this beautiful country is the yearly occurring Sierra Leone Marathon – a running event that nobody with an adventurous soul should miss.
It is organized by Street Child, an international charity organization that supports some of the most vulnerable children with providing them education.
Your experience at Sierra Leone Marathon 2024
2024 marks the 12th Anniversary of the marathon is a fantastic six-day adventure that would give you the opportunity to challenge yourself and experience Sierra Leone’s culture while doing something good. The marathon is one part of the trip and takes part on day 4.
Of course, nobody needs to run the full 42km – 21km, 10km and 5km are perfectly fine as well.
You will run on bumpy unpaved roads, along villages, through the jungle… Moreover, you will be warmly welcomed by Sierra Leoneans everywhere you go.
Visit the projects
Since one element of this extraordinary trip is supporting local projects, we are asking the participants to do a fundraising campaign before they come to Sierra Leone. This could be online fundraising, selling cakes or any other creative idea you have!
We can assure you 100% that the money goes directly into our projects. This is why it is very important for us to give you the opportunity to visit Street Child’s projects while you are there.
This is not only a chance to see how Street Child works with its local partners, but it also provides you the possibility to get in touch with the local community. Moreover, you would travel through lush green landscapes, meet children who live in rural areas, sing and dance with locals.
Every day will be a new adventure.

Depending on your budget, there are different accommodation options in Makeni you could choose from. It goes from staying in a very basic place with a bucket shower and shared dorm to a high standard hotel with all you need. Everything is possible!
And either way: It will be an adventure you will never forget.
