The Rock am Ring, or Rock at the Ring in German, is the ultimate European rock music festival that you shouldn’t miss. Held annually over three days, the event’s historic grounds are at the world-famous Nürburgring motorsports circuit in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, which previously hosted the F1 grand prix.
The festival was originally intended to be just a one-time event celebrating the launch of the newer and shorter race track back in 1985. But due to a surprising massive turnout of over 75,000 members, organizers decided to make it a yearly festival which is now one of the world’s biggest and most well-attended rock music events. Today, over 150,000 people from all over the world come to Germany to see rock legends perform each year.
Over 30 amazing Rock am Ring events have been held since then, with U2 being one of the first to grace the stage in 1985. Other big names from the heavy metal, full-throttle rock, and punk music arenas have solidified the event’s reputation as THE rock music festival to attend: Foo Fighters, Marilyn Manson, Gorillaz, Jimmy Eat World, Interpol and more. The Doctors will be headlining the 2019 event, with the rest of the lineup to be announced.
Visitors camp out in the stunning camp grounds, while several food stalls supply delicious sustenance and alcoholic beverages throughout the event. Rock am Ring will be open to kids 8 to 14 years old only if accompanied by a parent or guardian. For kids aged 14 to 16, unaccompanied admission will be allowed if parental consent is provided.
The festival will be held at the famous Nürburgring race track in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. There are two tickets available for the event: Weekend Festival Tickets and VIP Festival Tickets. Additional tickets will be required for camping access. However, if you opt not to camp, you will only be required to purchase a festival ticket and instead of the parking fee you can park your car with a daily fee for each day of the festival.
Parking areas will be available for those bringing their own vehicles or car rentals. Event organizers are providing shuttle bus services to and from various points within the festival grounds.
Keep in mind that it isn’t possible to reserve parking spots. Visitors will need a caravan parking badge for each vehicle, as well as one Caravan Camping ticket for each attendee.
For the festival, camping out like most of the other attendees is highly recommended because it’s a huge part of the experience. However, camping areas will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Several teams on-site will assist campers in finding a camping area. You will need to bring your own camping equipment which can only be placed in the camp plot assigned to you by the event staff. Public sanitary facilities will be available in all camping areas including flushing toilets and over 1,000 drinking water stations. Power outlets will also be provided. Other needs may be purchased at the supermarket located at the festival’s main entrance.
Attendees will need pre-purchased camping tickets to use the camping area for Rock am Ring. There are five camping tickets available each with its own assigned camping zone: General Camping, Green Camping, Rock’n’Roll Camping, Rock am Ring Experience, Caravan B-Zone 1, Caravan C-Zone1, and Caravan D-Zone 1. VIP camping will be available for the Rock am Ring Experience ticket, where comfortable tents good for two to four people in various categories will be available near the stages.
All camping areas will open by 12 noon of May 5, 2019, which will be accessible to all camping ticket holders. Kids below 16 years old will only be allowed to camp if they are with a guardian. Special campsite facilities will be available for people with disabilities.
Alternatively, the Rockotel and Lodge are mobile home options available to festival goers; these are accommodations fully equipped with beddings, wall cabinets, table, and power outlets.
Other facilities available to campers include high-end dining, barbecue areas, 24-hour concierge services, paved walking paths, and WiFi access.
If you prefer not to camp, the town of Nürburg has several hotels nearby too.
Nürburg is famous worldwide for its rich motorsport history, so racing fans can enjoy lots of attractions and historical exhibitions about the sport. Love the thrill of the race? There are a handful of race tracks around town that you can race in. Don’t miss ring werk, the motorsport-centered indoor theme park with exciting attractions for kids and adults alike.
