Afro Nation Festival 2019: The Biggest Urban Music Beach Festival In Europe

Famous for 300 days of sun a year and its famous white sand and glistening sea, Portimao Portugal is hosting a brand new music festival in 2019. Afro Nation Festival is a brand new event offering a stacked lineup filled with local and international talent across four days. The Portuguese coast will play home to the world of Afrobeats, hip hop, R&B, dancehall and bashment. Accompanying the main festival programme, a number of exclusive boat and pool parties will also be available for visitors.

The very first edition of Afro Nation festival welcomes a range of talent. The headliners include a trio of Nigerian stars; Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy. Other popular acts include Stefflon Don, Ms Dynamite, IAMDDB, MIST and more.

Where to view Afro Nation Festival 2019

Afro Nation Festival takes place at Praia da Rocha, two miles south of the city of Portimao. You can find the festival on the towns main beach at Praia da Rocha, Portimao, 8500 Portimao. 

How to get around Portimao

Portimao is located approximately an hour west of Faro Airport, which serves most European airlines and can be reached from all major UK airports. Private transfers, bus transfers and taxis are available to transport visitors directly to and from the festival site. 

Upon arrival, Portimao offers a number of transport options. The city features a network of local bus routes and fares start at 1.50 euros for a single journey and 3.50 euros for a one day ticket. Travelling by car is not recommended for visitors due to the complex street system and many one-way roads; however, taxis are readily available. All taxis are metered and can be identified by their beige or black and green exteriors. They can be found at Taxi ranks located in all tourist areas and fares are approximately 5 euros from one point of the city to another.

Things to do in Portimao

The coastal town of Portimao is known for its stunning beaches. The festival is held at the city’s stunning main beach Praia da Rocha, surrounded by towering rock formations. Other popular beaches include Três Irmãos, Praia Grande and Praia dos Caneiros. Jet skis, small yachts and motorboats are also available for rental. There are also a number of popular historical attractions located throughout the town. The Fort of Santa Catarina and Fort of São João do Arade offer medieval remains with picturesque views of the entire city from the top. 

The waterfront paradise is also home to countless restaurants, bars and other dining options; and visitors are completely spoilt for choice with endless fresh seafood options. The national dish ‘Bacalhau’ is a salted cod dish which can be cooked in 365 ways and is a must-try during your visit. Popular beverage options include Aguardiente, a strong fortified wine, and Portugal’s national drinks. The eastern point of Praia da Rocha is home to the Portimao Marina, where you can find a large selection of bustling seafood spots and pizzerias. 

Exploring the Algarve is essential as the area extends beyond Portimao. Lagos Old Town is located just 30 minutes from Portimao and offers stunning 15th-century buildings, cobblestone streets and a range of museums and historical attractions. The Benagil Caves tour is also a highly recommended attraction, offering a two-hour guided tour through the sea caves and stunning natural rock formations.

Wizkid – Nigerian singer and songwriter Wizkid is one of three world-class headliners. The musician began recording music at only 11 years old and has since grown into the international spotlight. His popular tracks include ‘Come Closer’ and ‘My Love’; and he has collaborated with the likes of Major Lazer, Dua Lipa and Ty Dolla $ign. 

Burna Boy – Fellow Nigerian musician Burna Boy will also headline the brand new event on the Portuguese coast. The Afro-fusion singer and songwriter rapidly stormed into the music industry in 2010 and achieved what many cannot, in only two years. With an incredible voice, talent, skills and charisma, Burna Boy has quickly become Nigeria’s fastest-rising star to watch out for. 

Busy Signal  Known for leading the contemporary dancehall movement, Jamaican musician Busy Signal has been a huge part of the scene for nearly two decades. Having released many hit singles and multiple albums, the reggae-fusion artist has become a sought out act throughout Europe; and is definitely one to watch.
