Boise, Idaho, has been gaining traction of late as a cultural hotspot — and some big names are taking notice. The X Games, which held Qualifiers in the City of Trees in both 2017 and 2018, announced its impending return to the capital city for 2019, immediately after this year’s event.
It’s also one of five lucky U.S. locations that will host the annual Scallywag punk rock fest. After two years of a successful run in sunny San Diego, Scallywag has expanded this year into Boise, as well as Austin, Denver, Washington and Auburn a suburb of Seattle.
The festival also changed its name from Ye Scallywag! to the simpler “Scallywag” in 2018. While the exact reason behind the name change is unclear, some insiders claim that it’s intended to separate the tour from Kanye West’s album “Ye,” which was released in June.
Craft Beer, Punk Rock, Ska. Heaven
True to its punk rock roots, Scallywag features both music and beer. With the exception of Auburn, beer tastings (included with the price of admission) will kick off the festival.
All five shows will be all-ages, but only those 21 and up will be allowed in the beer gardens. VIP Lounge ticket holders will get to enter the beer garden one hour ahead of the General Admission crowd. While the beer selection will vary by city, breweries on board include Thr3e Punks Ales, Avery Brewing, Wild Barrel, Artifex Brewing, and Stone Brewing. Stone is Southern California’s largest brewery, famous for its flagship beer, Arrogant Bastard.
Fletcher from Pennywise
To keep its punk audience on their toes, the musical lineup will rotate slightly depending on city. Heavy-hitters Rancid and Bad Religion will trade off the headlining slot, sharing the top spot in both Denver and Austin.
Most of the lineup is U.S. West Coast heavy, featuring Pennywise, from Hermosa Beach, California; Orange County’s Reel Big Fish; and The Interrupters, who hail from Los Angeles. Pennywise are currently promoting their twelfth studio album, “Never Gonna Die.”
Headliners Bad Religion, known for their politically charged lyrics and songs that touch on social justice issues, were also formed in Los Angeles.
East Bay punks Rancid will unfortunately bow out in Auburn and Boise. And in San Diego, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones will join Rancid as co-headliners in place of Bad Religion.
Scallywag kicks off in Denver on Saturday, September 22 at the Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre. Additional Scallywag dates are as follows:
Sunday, Sept. 23: Austin360 Amphitheatre — Austin Texas
Saturday, Sept. 29: White River Amphitheatre — Auburn, Washington
Sunday, Sept. 30: CenturyLink & Grove Plaza — Boise, Idaho
Saturday, Oct. 20: Waterfront Park — San Diego, California
