“Everything’s bigger in Texas,” is a saying that many of us think about when we imagine life in Texas. This rings true with Rodeo Austin. The rodeo is ranked in America’s top 5 as one of the largest and most well-attended Rodeo’s. And when we say “bigger in Texas”, we mean it! Not only are food portions large-and-in-charge, there are over 100 bands, massive lines of food trucks, hundreds of professional rodeo athletes, large craft beer gardens and giant cattle encompassing the 10-day affair.
So why attend the Austin Rodeo?
It is one of the longer standing rodeos in the country having started in 1938. Since then, the rodeo has evolved and become uniquely quirkly, matching the vibe and energy of the city of Austin. And, whether you are a born and raised Texan or a city-slicker with a keen appetite for new foods and music, or even a Northerner in search of deliciously addicting craft beer, the Austin Rodeo has you covered.
Facts for the Foodie or Music Maniac
Local food trucks like Might Cone, Waygu on wheels, Gebby’s BBQ, and Trudy’s offer a slew of unique food items that will appease any taste bud. Pair that with the traditional carnival fried foods and you’ll be truly immersed in Austin’s food flare. In addition, there is a BBQ cook-off competition on the outdoor stage throughout the month of March.
In addition, Cowboy Breakfast that cannot be missed. It is a SUPER-SIZED Texas breakfast that kicks off the fair and rodeo. From pancakes, chuck wagon biscuits, doughnuts, brisket tacos and more, this free event will leave you with a full heart and full tummy.
And with a full belly, you can expect to see all types of music (not just country) at the rodeo. The two week-long event will feature nearly 100 live bands. At the end of March there is a Bullet Proof close out party too with live music, food and plenty of fun for all in attendance. Last year’s main stage line-up included Dwight Yoakam, Elle King, Cole Swindell, Fitz and the Tantrums, Chase Bryant, Kenny Rogers, Josh Turner, Patti Labelle, Old Dominion, Neal McCoy, Kevin Fowler, Charley Pride, and Cody Johnson.
For the Rodeo Junkie
The epitome of “weird Austin” is at the root of its Western style culture. With specialty acts including pig races, a petting zoo, pony ride, world renown trick roper Tomas Garcilazo, Team Ghost Riders (monkey’s riding dogs duo), this will fill your rodeo-ridin’ cup. Daily rodeo performances run Monday-Saturday.
In addition, there is a Youth Auction featuring the top 414 exhibitors from the junior livestock show. The event is free and open to the public. The Youth Auction will reward young exhibitors who competed and placed in the top 414 out of 8,000+ entries during Rodeo Austin. So, keep an eye out for the kids during your visit at the rodeo.

While the two weeks at the Rodeo are fun, weird, and sometimes wild, Rodeo Austin has always had a big name when it comes to giving back. Rodeo Austin supports over 2,000 students through a scholarship program. The program started in 1981 and has awarded over $7.5 million in college scholarships to students in need.
