Motocross has its origins in the motorcycle trials competitions in the United Kingdom in the early 1900’s. Originally a test of balance and finesse, these trials soon became contests to see who could be first across the finish line. As Moto grew in popularity, it soon became known as motocross- a combination of the French word for motorcycle, motocyclette and “cross country.”
Originally, the moto bikes used in these off-road races, or scrambles, were not much different from the motorcycles used in road racing. By the mid 1900’s however, companies like Husqvarna began making smaller, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles that were popular because of their agility and maneuverability. By the late 1960’s Japanese manufacturers like Suzuki dominated the moto track, and motocross was taking off in the United States. Thanks to stricter environmental regulations and increases in technology, most competitive moto bikes today are four-stroke bikes.
One of the most influential moto events of all, the Motocross of Nations is still held annually, where the hardcore make the pilgrimage from all over the world. Moto events come in all shapes and sizes, from the epic tracks and jumps of supercross, to the hard enduro mayhem of Red Bull’s Minas Riders, to the insane jumps and tricks of the Nitro World Games.
