Surfest 2019 returns to Newcastle, Australia

Surfest Newcastle Australia 2019 is made possible through the ongoing support of Burton Automotive, the NSW Government through Destination NSW, crowd funding from the Newcastle business community, Orica, Newcastle City Council, and Wandiyali ATSI Inc. Surfest 2019 features international fields of competitive surfers in the WSL QS6000 Burton Automotive Pro, the WSL QS6000 Surfest Women’s Pro and the WSL JQS1000 Surfest Pro Junior along with a broad range of diverse and complementary surfing events.

Surfest Newcastle Australia 2019 commences on 2 February 2019 with the Port Stephens Toyota QS6000 wildcard trials at Birubi beach and concludes at Merewether beach on 17 March 2019, where the male and female champions of the QS events add their names to an enviable list of past champions.

Merewether beach is a National Surfing Reserve and home to festival patron and Australia’s most accomplished men’s world professional surfing champion, four-time world champion Mark Richards (1979-82). Mark Richards was voted by the public and peers as the most influential Australian surfer (1963-2013) at Surfing Australia’s 50th anniversary.

The event takes place on a number of beaches in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens.  For all the events, locations and dates head to the 2019 schedule.

Getting to Newcastle

Flying: If you are flying in you can get to Sydney International Airport which is a 2 hour 30 min drive to Newcastle or fly to Newcastle Airport.

Public transport is the best way to get to the event, with extra weekend bus services planned from Newcastle and Hamilton to make getting there easy. You can use your Opal card to travel to the event site.

Things to do in Newcastle

There are loads of surf spots to check out in Newcastle town and the surrounding beaches north and south of the city.

Head into town for some epic bars and restaurants after a busy day at the event. It’s well worth heading to the Visit Newcastle site to get the lowdown on what’s going on during Surfest.

Drop Festival is bring tunes around country during the Australia leg of the World surfing League tour. During the final weekend don’t forget to check out The Drop Festival on Sunday 16 March, 2019.
