Experience the juxtaposition of old and new at the Moga Festival, held at the filming location of the Red City from the cult favorite, Game of Thrones.
Essaouira, Morocco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a historic destination that has long been captivating travelers from all over the world. The Moga Festival is the best way to experience this enchanting destination. Step back in time with its rich architectural heritage, and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture blending old tradition in a hippie paradise punctuated by a one-of-a-kind musical event.
The Moga Festival may be brand new in the music festival industry, but they are no doubt already impressive, having placed Africa in the map for international music festivals. In 2016, incredible acts including Ron Morelli, Terekke, DJ Tennis, and Lee Burridge graced the stages. This year, Maher Daniel, Achil, Acid Pauli, Jilla, Rossko, Seb Zito, and more will play host at the Moga Festival. In between sets, enjoy the dozens of delightful activities that the organizers have planned out: beach parties, musical brunches, digital video installations, and educational workshops among others.
‘Three days of electronic music and the digital arts are enhanced by the blissful sensory experiences available for your enjoyment in Morocco’s beautiful port town of Essaouira.’
Come for the Moga Festival, stay for the culture. We bet you’ll leave Morocco with a brand-new love for life after this experience.
The event will be held in various locations in Essaouira including the elegant Sofitel Mogador, the French Institute, Taros Café, the Dar Souiri cultural centre, and of course, Skala du Port which is better known as the world-famous set for the Red City in Game of Thrones. The workshops, talks, dance show, master classes, fusion events, and exhibitions will be held in the medina.
Most of the attractions within Essaouira is accessible on foot, which is perfect for appreciating the beauty of this historic port town. Some taxi services are available too, but the most efficient means of transport here is by bicycle or motorbike.
Riads are traditional Moroccan houses that have been converted into small, charming hotels. There are loads of these in the medina of Essaouira, usually designed with impeccable tile work, white walls, and traditional local decorations. Riads are usually found in quiet alleyways, but check out or some awesome deals on accommodations on the map below.
One of the best things about Essaouira is its laid-back atmosphere. The town itself isn’t very big, and there are nearby beaches that add to its holiday vibe. The souqs (bazaars) and medinas are highly recommended, but prepare for the overwhelming array of sights, colors, sounds, and smells here.
Take a stroll through the medina, which is especially beautiful at sunset. It is walled, just like the other old towns of Morocco, but it’s extra impressive in Essaouira since they’re built on cliffs. After the festival, reinvigorate yourself by going to a hammam to try a traditional steam bath. Take home some argan oil; better yet, visit an argan oil cooperative where you can observe women using traditional tools to hand press the oils to create the world’s best argan beauty products.
By night, Essaouira is just as enchanting. Have some beachfront cocktails or sip some wine at upscale rooftop bars. No matter what it is you’re into, Essaouira will have something for you.
The Moga Festival will be held from October 12-14, 2018.
