Hinterland Music Festival 2019: Iowa’s Favourite Festival

Hinterland Festival is an annual music event held in the Iowa countryside in the USA. This year, the festival will expand it’s a unique experience to three-days, showcasing the best of local and international musical talent. Now in its fifth year, the event annually welcomes more than 20,000 festival goers to the popular live music venue in Saint Charles, just outside Des Moines.

This year, the festival will expand to include a third day to accommodate the demand of popular artists and rising stars. The festival will welcome Irish musician Hozier, who will headline the first day of the event. Joining the musician will be popular American country musician Kacey Musgraves, as well as Hippo Campus, Jade Bird and Keuning. Day two will be headlined by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, alongside St. Paul & The Broken Bones, The Wood Brothers, Colter Wall and more. Brandi Carlile will headline the final day of the event, sharing the stage with Maggie Rogers, Dawes, Brent Cobb and more.

Hinterland Music Festival takes place at the Avenue of the Saints Amphitheater in Saint Charles, Iowa. You can find the event at 3357 St Charles Rd, St Charles, IA 50240, USA. 

How to get around Saint Charles

Located just outside the Iowa capital of Des Moines, Saint Charles is best accessed by car. The nearest major airport is Des Moines International Airport, located approximately 30 minutes north of Saint Charles and the Avenue of the Saints Amphitheater. Car rental facilities are available throughout the Airport as well as in the city, making it easy to source a reliable form of transportation to and from the event. Parking is available on site and you can purchase passes directly from the festival, Three-day parking passes start at $25.

An official festival shuttle service will also be available, with an unlimited shuttle pass available to purchase for $20. The Pass provides unlimited rides between Southridge Mall in Des Moines and the festival for the entire weekend. The shuttle will operate from 3 pm-midnight on Friday and 10 am – midnight on Saturday and Sunday; running approximately every 30 minutes. Some participating hotels may also provide shuttle transportation to and from the venue.

There are a number of accommodation options available for visitors of Hinterland Music Festival. Camping at Hinterland offers a unique earthy experience to the festival. A number of camping passes are available, ranging from tent camping to RV camping and more. Cars are not allowed on campsites but designated car parking spaces will be available nearby.

If you are not camping at the festival, there are a number of hotels and Airbnbs available nearby. You can explore all the nearby accommodation options below. It is recommended to stay in the main city of Des Moines, as the festival will provide direct shuttles between the city and the event.

Things to do in Saint Charles

The small town of Saint Charles features a number of attractions such as the Imes Covered Bridge and the Two Saints Winery. You can also find the Madison County Winery nearby. The nearby Iowa capital ‘Des Moines’ features a variety of popular attractions. You can find a number of outdoor attractions such as the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and the Blank Park Zoo.

You can also find the popular Des Moines’ Downton Farmer’s Market, which operates on Saturdays from 7 am to 12 pm and features nearly 300 vendors from across the state. Everything from arts and crafts to locally grown produce, Iowa-raised meat and more can be found here. Other popular attractions in Des Moines include the Jasper Winery, the Salisbury House & Gardens and the Iowa State Capital landmark.
