Bloomsday Festival 2024: Celebrating Ulysses

Bloomsday Festival is an annual celebration of Irish Author James Joyce, based on his novel Ulysses. Based on the events which took place on June 16, 1904, the very first Bloomsday Festival was celebrated in 1954. Since then, it has developed into a colourful and diverse celebration of the beloved author and his work. The world famous literary street carnival takes place each year in June in the Irish capital of Dublin. 

A range of events from lectures, reading, workshops, walking tours and more, take place throughout Bloomsday Festival. Bloomsday Breakfasts, theatre and music performances and pub crawls are amongst the most popular activities.

Bloomsday Festival celebrates Thursday June 16, 1904. The day is depicted in the James Joyce novel ‘Ulysses’ and is named after the central character: Leopold Bloom. The novel follows the life of this character as well as many other real and fictional characters – from 8am on the 16th of June 1904, to the early hours of the next morning.

Celebrations include dressing up like the characters from the novel, wearing clothes similar to the style seen during the era. Bloomsday Festival celebrates the novel in a number of ways, including readings, performances and visiting places referenced to in the book.

Bloomsday Festival takes place in the Irish capital of Dublin. There are numerous events held throughout the entire city, including popular local pubs, parks and theatres.

How to get to Dublin

The nearest airport is Dublin Airport, which is located approximately 20 minutes from the city centre. Most major airlines operate throughout this airport as well as popular European budget airlines.

Things to do at Bloomsday Festival Dublin’s week-long celebration offers a range of unique and exciting activities. One of the most popular events is the Joycean Pub Crawl. Offering a guided tour of some of Dublin’s best loved pubs, visitors will explore numerous inspiring establishments.

The Bloomsday Bus is another popular attraction, offering a sightseeing tour around ‘Dear Dirty Dublin’. Stopping at some of the town’s most famous attractions, visitors will explore the ‘Hibernian metropolis’ on this 2.5 hour tour. This event takes place Tuesday, June 16, from 10am to 12.30pm and also at 1.30pm – 4pm.

Bloomsday Walking Tours take place throughout the day of June 16. You are guided on a one hour tour of the city and get to explore some of the key locations from the book. Tours take place every hour on the hour from 10am – 5pm.
