Bloomsday Festival is an annual celebration of Irish Author James Joyce, based on his novel Ulysses. Based on the events which took place on June 16, 1904, the very first Bloomsday Festival was celebrated in 1954. Since then, it has developed into a colourful and diverse celebration of the beloved author and his work. The world famous literary street carnival takes place each year from June 11-16 in the Irish capital of Dublin. A range of events from lectures, reading, workshops, walking tours and more, take place throughout Bloomsday Festival. Bloomsday Breakfasts, theatre and music performances and pub crawls are amongst the most popular activities.

“A weeklong celebration of all things Bloom takes place every year in June!”

Bloomsday Festival celebrates Thursday the 16th of June, 1904. The day is depicted in the James Joyce novel ‘Ulysses’ and is named after the central character: Leopold Bloom. The novel follows the life of this character as well as many other real and fictional characters – from 8am on the 16th of June 1904, to the early hours of the next morning.

Celebrations include dressing up like the characters from the novel, wearing clothes similar to the style seen during the era. Bloomsday Festival celebrates the novel in a number of ways, including readings, performances and visiting places referenced to in the book.
